How to Prepare for Your First Business Trip

Preparing for your first business trip can be both exciting and nerve-racking. While it may seem overwhelming at first, you can rest assured that these tips will help you plan like a pro.

Pack Light

If possible, try to pack light. You don’t want to be dragging around a huge suitcase for a 2- or 3-day trip. Carefully plan what you want to wear each day and stick to the company’s dress code. Don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes in addition to your dress shoes. Bring transitional pieces that can be worn from the office to happy hour.

Carry On Your Essentials

If you’ve traveled by airplane before, you know that sometimes your checked luggage doesn’t always make it to its destination. Avoid the stress of having to explain how you left your laptop in your suitcase and pack everything you need for business in a carry-on bag. This includes an extra business appropriate outfit, pair of dress shoes, device chargers, and toiletries needed for that evening and the next morning.

Be Extra Organized

Did your company book the trip? Great! Plug the itinerary into a tracker (we like to use TripIt) to organize your plans. This allows you to have everything in one place—from your calendar of appointments to weather reports and road maps. It also syncs across multiple devices, which comes in handy if you accidentally leave your phone at the hotel.

Schedule Smart

Because you’re in a new city, make sure to give yourself plenty of time in between meetings and appointments so you don’t get overwhelmed. Utilize Magnolia Hotel’s meeting spaces, where you can have access to everything you need to be productive and make things happen. Plus, by scheduling your meetings right at your hotel, you won’t have to worry about transportation or inclement weather putting a damper on your day.

Have Fun

Business trips should be a mixture of business and pleasure. Take a walk around town during lunch and experience the local shops and restaurants. Invite your coworkers out with you or simply take a walk to clear your head. With locations in Dallas, Houston, Omaha, and St. Louis, there is plenty to see and do when you stay in the heart of each city!

At Magnolia, we’ll work hard to make sure your business stay is easy and enjoyable. Our boutique hotels are in major metropolitan areas around the country, many in historic buildings near the city’s top attractions. Plan your business trip today by calling 888-915-1110 or visiting us online.
