The reviews are in and vacationers have spoken: The Magnolia Hotel locations in Denver, St. Louis, Omaha and Houston are must-visit travel destinations.

For the past seven years, American travel website TripAdvisor has awarded its Certificate of Excellence (CoE) to top-rated resorts, hotels, restaurants and attractions around the world. “This recognition helps travelers identify and book properties that regularly deliver great service. TripAdvisor is proud to play this integral role in helping travelers feel more confident in their booking decisions,” says Heather Leisman, TripAdvisor’s VP of Industry Marketing. The awards are based largely on user ratings.

Most this year’s CoE recipients are restaurants, with hotels and resorts making up less than one-quarter of the award winners. How does TripAdvisor award the Certificates? Businesses must earn a minimum of four out of five “bubbles” from guests on the TripAdvisor website – the equivalent of four stars in a 5-star system.

Winners must also:

  • Be established on the site for at least a full year
  • Have a minimum number of reviews

That way, your Aunt Sally can’t rate your bakery with five bubbles a handful of times and land you a coveted TripAdvisor award three months later. The quality of reviews is also considered – one well-written, detailed, lengthy review with photos can easily trump five “it was great” comments. I had accidentally left a valuable item behind, and not only did they find it and return it, they also offered to ship it to me free of charge.
